Collection: The Bombay Ballad

Bombay has always been a city shaped by water. Long before its iconic skyline emerged, its natural harbour connected India to the world, transforming the city into one of Asia's most significant maritime gateways.

The Bombay Ballad Collection celebrates this extraordinary maritime legacy through an original interpretation of the historic Toile de Jouy tradition. Inspired by the elegance of eighteenth-century Delftware and toile illustration, the illustrations are rendered in Bombay Gothic's signature maroon against powder-blue nautical stripes, which weave together Ballard Estate's architecture, Bombay's harbour, tropical landscapes and seafaring history into timeless objects for everyday living.

At the heart of this collection is Ballard Estate — a neighbourhood created through the reclamation of land from the sea in the early twentieth century and planned as the commercial gateway to the city. Its Edwardian and Neo-Classical buildings, including the Mackinnon Mackenzie Building, Darabshaw House, the Grand Hotel, the Port Trust precinct and the Port War Memorial, become part of an expansive illustrated landscape that celebrates Bombay's maritime identity.

Ships, docks, lighthouses, tropical trees, sea birds and harbour vistas are woven together with architecture, reflecting the city's enduring relationship with trade, navigation and global exchange.
