Collection: Urbs Prima in Indis

The High Gothic dream as envisaged by Frere resulted in a series of planned, grouped public buildings of similar style, scale and materials which exudes a grandeur unparalleled in the world. Conceived between 1876 and 1878, little did Stevens know that his design for Victoria Terminus will go on to become the landmark for Bombay and characterise the style “Bombay Gothic”. The construction of this edifice was supervised by Siteram Khanderao and Mahdero Janardhan working for PWD. Ten years later, Stevens designed the corner plot of Brihanmumbai municipal corporation (then known as the Bombay Municipal Corporation).  It is here atop the central gable where the sculpture designed by British Artist Hems represented “Urbs Prima in India, a motto which was then adopted by BMC.
