Collection: Kala Ghoda Kaleidoscope

Gifted by Sir Albert Sassoon, the Kala Ghoda was sculpted by the London based sculptor Sir Joseph Edgar Boehm at the cost of Rs. 12,500 which was unveiled in 1879. While the Watsons Hotel built in 1869 and the Gothic Revival David Sasoon Library built in 1870 by Scott, McClelland & Company were already in existence, the monumental Elphinstone college by Khan Bahadur Muncherjee was completed in 1880’s along with the oldest surviving departmental store building, the Army and Navy stores, designed by Gostling Chambers and Fritchley in 1890’s. Bombay was embracing the modernity and creating a unique Indian Neo Gothic style of charm and exuberance.”
